On 13 Aug 2012, Red Hat announcing the availability of a preview release of Red Hat OpenStack which runs on top of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.
This means anyone can go to redhat.com/openstack and download a preview version of our future Red Hat OpenStack product, try it for free, and give RedHat feedback. The preview is free of cost, but unsupported by Red Hat and not recommended for production use.
The preview is based on the OpenStack Essex release including packaging changes and backported bug fixes. After the upstream release of OpenStack Folsom, Red Hat will update the preview release to a Folsom based distribution. Note, Red Hat's commercially available offering will be based on Folsom.
Red Hat has been following, testing, and contributing to OpenStack for a while now. Over the last two years, OpenStack has seen a tremendous amount of change with a new major release coming out about every six months. We believe that the Folsom release will be the first release that has the baseline feature set and hardening needed for everyday enterprise usage. Red Hat is concentrating productization efforts on the Folsom release. We are making a lot of progress, but we aren't ready to announce an exact date yet for the official release of Red Hat OpenStack. However, it will be sometime in early 2013.
